History

For thousands of years the area was home to the

Chumash Indians. In 1782 the mission station San

Buenaventura was founded. Buenaventura is composed

of the two Spanish words buena (meaning "good") and

ventura (meaning "destiny"). The city, which originated

near the mission, was called San Buenaventura. In 1872,

Ventura County emerged by demarcating the southern

part of Santa Barbara County.

The Rancho Camulos is a National Historic Landmark in

the county. A total of 36 buildings and sites of the counties

are registered in the National Register of Historic Places.  Numerous tech companies are home here.

According to the Census Bureau, Ventura County has a total area of ​​5,718.7 km²; of which 4,778.5 km² is land and 940.2 km² (16.43%) is water.
