History

Sutter County was one of the first built counties in California. It was

created in 1850. Parts of it were ceded to Placer County in 1851. It was

named after General Johann August Sutter who was granted large-scale

land ownership by the Mexican government, and named his first

settlement New Helvetia (today's Sacramento). 

In 1841, the general built a large ranch in this area, to which he retreated

impoverished in 1850, when Goldschucher robbed him during the gold

rush of his estates.
