History

Solano County was one of the first built counties in

California. It was created around 1850 approximately at the

same time to the establishment of the state.

The name of the county comes from the Spanish

Franciscan and missionary, Father Francisco Solano,

whose name was passed on to the local baptism of a local

Indian chief. Before he received the name Solano, the chief

was named Sem-yeto, which stands for "brave" or

"courageous hand". At the request of General Mariano Vallejo, the county was named after the chief Solano, who once ruled the land and the tribes between Petaluma Creek and the Sacramento River. 

A total of 21 buildings and sites of the counties are registered in the National Register of Historic Places 

Geography

According to the Bureau of the Census of the United States, its total area is 2,348 km², of which 2,148 km² of land and 201 km² (or 8.55%) of bodies of water. The county is located approximately halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento and belongs to the San Francisco Bay Area (Bay of San Francisco).
