History

Traces of Amerindian presence date back several thousand

7,000 years. The north of Mount Shasta and the east was

occupied by the Shastas , the Karuks lived along the Klamath

River , the Modocs to the east and the Wintus to the south of

Mount Shasta.

Siskiyou County was created on March 22nd 1852 from

portions of the Shasta and Klamath Counties. It was named after the Siskiyou Mountains. Portions of the territory were subsequently given to the county of Modoc in 1855.

The county is crossed by the Siskiyou Trail of Amerindian origin that connects the Central Valley of California to the Pacific Northwest. In 1851, the discovery of gold near the town of Yreka brought hundreds of prospectors.

A total of 17 buildings and sites of the counties are registered in the National Register of Historic Places.

Siskiyou County has a total area of ​​16,440 square kilometers. Of which, 16.283.3 square kilometers is land and 157 square kilometers (0.96 percent) is water surface.
