History

Reconversion: birth of Silicon Valley

Formerly promoted as Valley of Delights, after two centuries of an agricultural tradition committed by the Spanish missionaries, the region has been converted in a few decades to new technologies.

As early as 1939, Hewlett-Packard was founded there; then in 1943 IBM chose San Jose for its headquarters on the West Coast. From the postwar period to the 1950s, several other electronics companies followed this example: Varian Associates, Fairchild Semiconductor, etc… The Silicon Valley appellation dates back to 1971. The concentration of companies in the computer / electronics sector accelerated throughout the 1980s and 1990s, while at the same time agriculture disappeared from the north of the county. Today, Santa Clara County is home to the headquarters of famous companies such as AMD, Apple, Cisco Systems, eBay, Facebook, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Yahoo!, etc.

Geography

Santa Clara County is located in the southern part of San Francisco Bay. It is crossed from north to south by the Santa Clara Valley, formerly agricultural and now very urbanized (Silicon Valley is synonymous with Santa Clara Valley). The valley is bordered by the Diablo Range and Santa Cruz Mountains to the south.
