It covers most of the south just on the San Francisco peninsula and north of Santa Clara County. The San Francisco International Airport is located at the northern end of the county, and Silicon Valley also known as Santa Clara County begins at the southern end. Established in 1856 from county lands of San Francisco and Santa Cruz, in 2010 the population was 718,451. The administrative seat (County Seat) is Redwood City, the largest city of San Mateo.

History

San Mateo County was formed in 1856 from parts of

the San Francisco County. It was named after Saint

Matthew. As a place name, St. Matthew first appeared

in 1776. Until 1850 it was named San Mateo.

Burlingame - City of San Mateo County is home to the 

well known Burlingame public library. It was founded by

the established municipal regulation on October 11, 1909.

After the Loma-Prieta earthquake in 1989, the city

approved the issuance of bonds for reconstruction of the

library. The library won prizes for its architecture and was presented in the Library Journal. 

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of ​​1,919 square kilometers (741 square miles). 1,163 square kilometers (449 square miles) of it is land area and 756 km² (292 square miles) of it (39.40%) are water. A number of streams in the interior of the bay drain the eastern part of the county including the San Bruno Canal and the Colma Canal. Currents draining Western County include the Frenchmans Channel, the Pilarcitos Canal, the Naples Canal, the Middle Creek and the Denniston Canal.
