History

Plumas County was founded in 1854 from parts of Butte County.

In 1864 a new county of Lassen was separated from a significant

part of Plumas County. A little later in Plumas County part of Sierra

County entered. It was named after the river Feather River, whose

Spanish name is Rio de la plumas, which means the river of the

spring.

Geography

The total area of ​​the Plumas County is 6770 km²; of which 6,610 km² is land and 160 km² (2.3%) are water surfaces.

Plumas County is at the northern end of the Sierra Nevada range. Most of the county's territory is a mountainous terrain, which is a transition zone between the north of the Sierra Nevada and the southern tip of the Cascade Mountains. Lassen Peak, which is the southernmost volcano of the Cascade Mountains, is located near the northern border of the district. Within the county is part of the national park Lassen-Volkanik.
