History

Nevada County was created in 1851 with part of the county

of Yuba. The county was named after Nevada City, a name

derived from the mountains of the “Sierra Nevada “. The word

Nevada means "snowy" in Spanish.

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a total area of ​​2524 km ² (974 mi²) of which 2480 km ² (958 mi²) is land area and 44 km ² (17 mi ²) or 1.73% water.

The western part of the county is defined by the course of several rivers and the irregular boundaries of contiguous counties. When the county was created, its founders wanted to include access to the transcontinental railway, so we added a rectangular section that includes the city of Truckee Railways.
