History

Mono County founded on 21 April 1861 from parts of Fresno

County, Calaveras County and Mariposa County. In 1866

parts of Mono County were joined to Inyo County.

Geography

According to the Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 8,112  square kilometers (3.1  sq mi ), of which 7,884  sq km (3  sq mi ) is land and 225  square kilometers (86.9  sq mi ) (2.79%) is Water.

The county is located in the east of central California under the Sierra Nevada, whose main crest forms the western boundary of the county. To the east, the state border to Nevada is at the same county boundary. Geographically, it belongs to the Basin and Range region apart from the shares of Sierra Nevada. The valleys are dry and poorly fertile due to the rainfall. The higher grades are largely wooded, in federal ownership and belong to the Inyo National Forest, a national forestry. In the center of the county lies the named Mono Lake.
