History

Merced County was founded in 1855 from parts of

Mariposa County. In 1856, parts were separated to the

Fresno County. It takes its name from the Merced River

that flows through the county. 

Geography

The county is located north of Fresno and southeast of San Jose and has a total area of ​​5,130 square kilometers. Of which, 112 square kilometers of water are (2.19 percent). The county is often considered part of the San Francisco Bay Area, but actually forms part of the Monterey Bay Area.
