History

Kings County was formed in 1893 of the split of the

county of Tulare with its western part. In 1909 a piece of

the county of Fresno was added to the county of Kings.

The county owes its name to the Kings River. Padre

Munoz tells in 1806 in his diary that it was discovered in

1805 by explorers who named it Rio de los Santos Reyes

(The River of the Sovereign Saints). 

Geography

Kings County has an area of 3,604 km2. Its land extends

over 3,603 km2 while water accounts for only 0.04% of the

county's surface.

Most of Lake Tulare was in Kings County. Although it was

dried up by intensive irrigation fields during the xix'th

century, it is nevertheless considered to have been one of

the largest freshwater lakes located west of Great Lakes.
