History

Imperial County was formed in 1907 from eastern part of

San Diego County, was named after Imperial Valley, which

itself named for the Imperial Land Company.

Geography

According to the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of ​​

11,608.3 km² , of which 10,813.2 km² part is land and 795.1 km² (6.85%) is water. The Colorado River forms the eastern border. Also in the county are the Salt Lake, the Algodones dunes and the Chocolate Mountains. It borders Mexico to the south, Arizona to the east, Riverside County to the north, and San Diego County to the west.
