History

​

Butte County was formed on February 6, 1917, from parts

of Bingham County. According to the 2000 census,

2,899 people lived in 1,089 households and 802 families

in Butte County. The population density was 1 person / km².

Ethnically, the population consisted of 94.65 percent white, 0.28 percent African Americans, 0.69 percent Native Americans, 0.24 percent Asian, 2.38 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.76 per cent came from two or more ethnic groups. 4.14% of the population was of Spanish or Latin descent.

Geography

According to the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of ​​4,343.4 km²; of which 4,245 km² are land and 98.4 km² (2.24%) is water.

The county is a little south-east of the geographical center of California and has an area of ​​5785 square kilometers, two square kilometers of which are water.  Being a rural county Butte is apart from the hustle of

some of the larger surrounding counties. The north of the county is part of the Basin and Range region; the south is located in the Snake River Plain. In the county is part of the Craters of the Moon National Monument. It is named after five Rhyolithic lavadoms , the largest of which is the Big Southern Butte.
